How to Stay Cool in Barcelona in August

Sara MiguélezAugust 3, 2026

I love Barcelona in summer. I want to say that first because everything else is going to sound like complaining, and it isn't. But August here is a lot. There comes a point when the fan is just moving warm air around the room and even walking to the metro feels ambitious.

Trying to keep exactly the same routine you have in May or October only makes the month harder. The trick is to stop treating every hour of the day the same.

Mornings are for actually doing things

If something matters—errands, work that needs a brain, exercise, a proper walk—try to do it before lunch. August mornings can be really nice, especially before the streets get busy. Starting early is much better than arriving everywhere feeling slightly melted.

Whatever does not get done by midday can usually wait. That sounds obvious, but it is very easy to plan an entire day and then wonder why none of it feels enjoyable.

I stopped fighting the afternoon

Early afternoon is better for somewhere cool and low-effort things: reading, answering messages or letting the day slow down a little.

It is not laziness. Being ambitious at 4 PM in August is a battle nobody needs to win.

The useful thing to know, especially if you are new here, is that the day is not over. Barcelona starts making sense again later. That is when seeing people, eating outside or doing something near the water starts to sound good again. A late swim, a terrace or a dinner that begins much later than planned all fit the August rhythm. Sitting at home with the fan on is fine sometimes, but not for a whole month.

The kind of evening I actually want

This Saturday, BIS has a new pool plan at SeaSea Club Barcelona. It starts at 5 PM and includes a BIS meeting area for anyone arriving alone.

If loud clubs are not your favourite place to talk, the pool setting may feel less intense. There is something to do besides standing with a drink and shouting over the music. The music is split between Reggaeton, Hip-Hop, R&B and Top Hits in the main area, with Afro House and Afrobeats in the open air.

If you are going alone, head for the BIS social area first. It gives you one clear place to start.

Before you go: the International Pool Party is on Saturday, August 8, from 5:00 PM to 10:30 PM, at SeaSea Club Barcelona, Carrer Port Esportiu 14P, Sant Adrià de Besòs. Entry is free only from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, and everyone needs their own BIS QR—a Meetup RSVP is not the same thing. Register here and show the QR at the BIS check-in beside reception. After 6 PM, the venue's own conditions apply. The dress code is smart casual, and outside food and drinks are not allowed.

One thing to check before leaving home: the event page confirms pool access but does not currently say whether towels, lockers or changing facilities are available.

August is easier when you stop treating every hour the same: use the mornings, slow down in the afternoon and make plans again when the heat begins to ease.
